About RunsOnLinux

I'm Patrick Jennings, and I write this site.

I've used Linux since 2004. It started with web servers. On the desktop it had two big drawbacks for a long time, the interface and games, and both have since been dealt with. So I'm moving my own desktops off Windows now. I began with Ubuntu, I use Fedora for development work because I want the newest tools there, and when somebody asks what they should install I say Mint. My favourite game is Civilization VI, which I play on an old Intel machine with 8 GB of memory.

That makes me a fellow switcher with a long head start on the plumbing. It seemed a useful position to write from.

Why the site exists

Windows 10 stopped getting security fixes on 14 October 2025, and a great many working computers were told they weren't good enough for Windows 11. Most of them will run Linux. What stops their owners is one question, usually with an app's name in it: will my thing still work?

Answering that is surprisingly hard. The information exists, scattered across forums, wikis and compatibility databases, and nearly all of it is written for people who already use Linux. This site collects it, checks it against the source, and says it in plain English with the bad news included.

What you can rely on

Every listing shows its sources and the date it was last checked. The guides carry my name. Nobody pays to appear here, and the page on how we choose sets out the standards.

Software changes faster than websites do. If something here is wrong or out of date, tell me and I'll fix it.
