Disk Usage Analyzer (Baobab)
Shows what is eating your disk space as a tree and a coloured map. The Linux answer to WinDirStat.
Our verdict
Disk Usage Analyzer answers the same question WinDirStat and TreeSize answer: where did my space go. Point it at your home folder or a whole drive and it lists folders by size, with a coloured ring or block map next to the list.
The one habit you have to change is deleting. WinDirStat lets you right-click a file in the map and remove it. This shows you the culprit but sends you to the file manager to do the deleting, which is slower but harder to get wrong.
On KDE systems the equivalent is called Filelight and looks almost the same. Either one is already there, so there is no download and nothing to pay.
What's good
- Usually already installed, so there is nothing to find or download
- Scans a folder or a whole drive and ranks what is biggest
- Shows the same kind of coloured block map WinDirStat users know
- Scans external drives and online accounts too
What to know first
- Cannot delete files from inside the map, so you switch to the file manager to clean up
- The block map is less detailed than the WinDirStat one
- Scanning a very full drive takes a while with little feedback
