Celluloid

Plain, tidy video player that opens almost any file you double click. Good default for everyday watching.

Our verdict

Celluloid is the quiet replacement for a Windows video player. You double click a file, it plays, and the window gets out of the way.

Underneath it uses mpv, which is the reason it handles odd file formats without you hunting for codecs. Playlists work by dragging files in. There are enough settings to change subtitles and audio tracks, and not many more than that.

If you liked how light Media Player Classic felt, this is the closest feeling on Linux. If you want a media library with artwork, or a lot of fine control over the picture, look at Kodi or VLC instead.

What's good

  • Opens virtually every video and audio format without installing anything extra
  • Simple window with a play bar, nothing to configure
  • Drag files in to build a playlist
  • Free and small to download

What to know first

  • No media library, cover art or collection view
  • Fewer settings than PotPlayer or Media Player Classic if you like fine control
  • Subtitle and filter options are basic compared with VLC
