Foliate

Clean ebook reader for EPUB, Kindle format files, comics and PDFs, with notes, bookmarks and a dictionary.

Our verdict

Foliate is the nicest way to actually read a book on a Linux screen. It opens the file, remembers where you were, and lets you set the typeface, size and page colour so it is comfortable at night.

It reads EPUB, comic book archives, PDFs and the Kindle formats, and it handles highlights, notes and bookmarks. A dictionary lookup is built in, which is handy for older books.

It reads files rather than shops. Books that carry copy protection, which includes most of what people buy in the Kindle store, will not open here. Pair it with calibre if you want something keeping the collection in order.

What's good

  • Pleasant to read in, with light, dark and sepia pages and adjustable type
  • Opens EPUB, Mobipocket, Kindle format files, FB2, comic book archives and PDFs
  • Highlights, notes, bookmarks and a built-in dictionary
  • Free, small and quick to open

What to know first

  • Cannot open books that carry copy protection, so most Kindle store purchases will not load
  • Does not manage a big library the way calibre does
  • No syncing of your reading position between devices
