PeaZip
Archive manager for zip, 7z, rar and around 200 other formats, with encryption.
Our verdict
PeaZip is the WinRAR and 7-Zip replacement. It extracts well over 200 formats and creates 7z, zip, tar and several others, with optional password protection.
Most Linux desktops already come with something that opens zip files, so you only need PeaZip when the built-in tool gives up. That usually means rar files, split archives or something old and unusual.
It is free with no nag screen, which alone makes it better behaved than WinRAR. The interface is denser than a Windows user expects, with a file browser on one side and archive tools on the other, but the right-click menu handles the everyday jobs.
What's good
- Opens rar and other awkward formats that the built-in archive tool often refuses
- Makes password-protected 7z and zip archives with strong encryption
- The same program is on Windows, so it will already look familiar to some switchers
What to know first
- Most Linux desktops already include a simpler archive tool, so this is extra
- Two-panel layout with a lot of buttons feels busy compared with WinZip
- Can create rar archives only in the sense of reading them, since making rar files is not possible
