Pika Backup

Friendly backups of your personal files to a drive or a remote server, encrypted.

Our verdict

Pika Backup is the nicest-looking backup tool on Linux and it is genuinely simple to use. Choose folders, choose a destination, set a password, and press Back Up Now.

Underneath it uses a well-tested backup engine, so each run stores only what changed and the whole archive is encrypted. The best part for a switcher is restoring. Old backups open in the ordinary file manager, so you find the file you want and copy it back like any other file.

As with Déjà Dup, this protects documents and photos, not the operating system. If you want to undo a broken update, that is Timeshift's job. Between the two you have the same cover Windows gave you with File History and System Restore.

What's good

  • Clear, modern interface that explains what it is about to do
  • Old backups are browsed in the normal file manager, so restoring is drag and drop
  • Can keep a local copy and a remote copy at the same time

What to know first

  • Saves personal data only, and cannot restore a whole broken system
  • The remote storage option expects a server you already have access to
  • Fewer cloud destinations than Déjà Dup offers
