Piper
Settings app for gaming mice. Changes DPI steps, button assignments and the light colour on supported models.
Our verdict
Piper is the window you get when you want to change what the side buttons on your gaming mouse do. It sits on top of a system service called libratbag, which is the part that actually knows how to talk to each mouse, and it shows a picture of your model with the settings laid out around it.
Whether it helps comes down to your mouse. Logitech, Roccat, SteelSeries, Etekcity and G.Skill are the makes covered, and inside those makes the list is model by model. Razer and Corsair mice do not appear, so if that is what you own the buttons keep whatever they were last set to and Piper cannot change them.
Where it does work it is enough for most people. Set the DPI steps, put copy and paste or back and forward on the thumb buttons, pick a colour, and on mice with onboard memory the settings stay with the mouse.
What's good
- Simple window with a picture of your mouse and a setting for each button
- Writes the settings into the mouse itself on models that store them
- Covers DPI steps, button assignments, profiles and lighting colour
- Free and available in the app store on most systems
What to know first
- Supported makes are limited to Logitech, Roccat, SteelSeries, Etekcity and G.Skill, so Razer and Corsair mice are not covered
- Even on a supported make, your particular model may not be in the list
- The settings come from reverse engineering, so a mouse can offer fewer options here than in the maker's own software
- It handles mice only, not keyboards or headsets
