ProtonUp-Qt
A small window for installing extra compatibility versions for Steam and Lutris, with no typing required.
Our verdict
ProtonUp-Qt does one job. Steam and Lutris run Windows games through a translation layer, and sometimes a particular game needs a different build of that layer than the one you have. Without this app you would be typing commands and moving folders. With it you open a window, pick a version from a list and press install.
It will not make a game work by itself. You use it when a guide or a ProtonDB report for your specific game says to try a certain version, and then you choose that version inside Steam.
It is free, open source and small. Install it from the Linux app store and forget it is there until a game misbehaves.
What's good
- Turns a job that normally needs the terminal into picking a version from a list
- Free and open source, with no account
- Installs from the Linux app store, or as a single file you can run anywhere
- Also removes old versions, so the folder does not fill up
What to know first
- Only useful once you already use Steam or Lutris, and useless on its own
- The version names it lists mean nothing until somebody tells you which one to pick
- Installing a different compatibility version can break a game that was working
The details
- Cost
- Free
- Open source
- Yes (GPL-3.0)
- How you install it
- App store (Flatpak), AppImage download
