qBittorrent
Torrent client that looks like the old µTorrent, without the ads.
Our verdict
qBittorrent is the straight replacement for µTorrent and it is better than what µTorrent became. Same rough layout, same queue, same bandwidth controls, and no advertising anywhere.
Everything a home user needs is included. Magnet links, sequential downloading so a video is watchable early, scheduling so it backs off during the day, and a remote web interface if you want to add downloads from your phone.
It is available on effectively every Linux system, usually straight from the app store. The settings run deep if you want them, but the defaults are fine and most people never open that screen.
What's good
- Layout is close enough to µTorrent that you will not need to look anything up
- No advertising, no bundled extras and no paid version
- Built-in search, RSS downloading and a web page for controlling it from another device
What to know first
- The search function relies on plug-ins that break when sites change
- Settings screens are dense and assume you know what a port or DHT is
- Nothing in it checks whether what you are downloading is legal where you live
