Tor Browser
The Tor Project's anonymity browser. The same official build on Linux as on Windows.
Our verdict
Tor Browser is the same download on Linux as it is on Windows, built and signed by the Tor Project, so switching costs you nothing. It is a modified Firefox that routes your traffic through volunteer relays to hide where you are and what you are reading.
The price is speed. Pages load slowly, video is close to unusable, and plenty of sites treat Tor traffic as suspicious and ask you to prove you are human, or refuse you entirely. That is the design working, not a fault.
Keep it as a second browser for the times you actually need it rather than as your daily one. The Flathub listing is a launcher that downloads and verifies the genuine Tor Browser for you and keeps it up to date.
What's good
- The Linux build is the official one from the Tor Project, not a copy
- Hides which sites you visit from your internet provider
- Nothing is kept between sessions, so there is no history to clean up
- Free, with no account and no sign-up
What to know first
- Noticeably slower than a normal browser because traffic takes a long route
- Many sites throw up extra security checks or block it outright
- Video streaming is impractical
- Not the right tool for everyday browsing, banking or shopping
