No. Autodesk's system requirements for 3ds Max 2026 list only 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. There is no Mac version either, let alone a Linux one.
3ds Max by Autodesk · Design, CAD & 3D · No way to run it
3ds Max is one of the most firmly Windows-only programs still in wide use. The official system requirements
for the 2026 release name Windows 10 version 1809 or higher and Windows 11, and nothing else. Autodesk has
never shipped it for Linux, even though it does ship its sibling Maya for Linux.
That leaves two honest options. Either keep a Windows machine, or a Windows installation you boot into, for
the work that needs 3ds Max, or change program. Trying to force it onto Linux through a compatibility layer
is not something Autodesk supports, and licence activation and graphics card features are exactly the parts
that tend to break.
Blender is the practical replacement, free and properly supported on Linux, covering modelling, animation
and rendering. For architectural visualisation, which is a big part of what 3ds Max is used for, Blender
gets you there but the plug-in ecosystem you relied on will not all have an equivalent.
Plan the file move while Windows still works. A .max file cannot be opened on Linux by anything. Export
scenes as FBX, Alembic or USD and save textures alongside them. Geometry and simple materials come through,
while modifiers, scripts and render settings do not.
Free and runs properly on Linux, covering modelling, animation and rendering. The controls and terminology are different, and 3ds Max plug-ins have no equivalent.
Your files: Cannot open .max files. Imports FBX, OBJ, Alembic and USD exports, with materials often needing rebuilding.
Only relevant if you used 3ds Max for precise modelling of real objects rather than visual effects. It is a measured engineering tool, not an artistic one.
Your files: Cannot open .max files. Imports STEP, IGES and STL.
This doesn't have to stop you
One stubborn program doesn't have to decide the whole question. You can keep Windows on the same PC and restart into it only when you need 3ds Max. Everything else you do can move.
