Does Avast run on Linux?

Verdict: No

No. Avast's home protection covers Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone, and the Linux product it does sell is for businesses. Linux desktops are not normally run with antivirus at all.

Avast by Gen Digital · Security & passwords · No way to run it

Avast Free Antivirus is offered for Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone. The only Linux thing Avast makes is Antivirus for Business, which its own documentation says is for business products only and points consumers elsewhere. There is no home Linux version to buy or download.

Linux desktops go without antivirus for practical reasons. Nearly all the malware a home user runs into is written for Windows and cannot run on Linux at all. Software comes from your system's app store instead of download sites, which shuts down the most common way something nasty gets onto a machine, and everything on the computer updates through that one place rather than through a dozen separate updaters.

That protects the computer, not you. Phishing emails, fake login pages and reused passwords work just as well on Linux as they do on Windows, because they trick the person rather than the machine. A password manager, and stopping to check a web address before you type a password into it, do more than any scanner.

If you have an Avast subscription, check what it covers before you cancel. Most of these bundles include a VPN and a password manager as well, and those parts may have Linux or browser versions that keep working. ClamAV is worth installing only if you pass files on to people who are still using Windows.

What to use instead of Avast

ClamAV

Different way of workingFree

Not an Avast replacement. Use it to check files before you pass them to someone on Windows.

Bitwarden

Different way of workingFree with paid extras

Covers the password manager part of a security bundle, with a free tier and apps on every platform.

This doesn't have to stop you

One stubborn program doesn't have to decide the whole question. You can keep Windows on the same PC and restart into it only when you need Avast. Everything else you do can move.
