Does Bitdefender run on Linux?

Verdict: No

No. Bitdefender's home products cover Windows, Mac, Android and iOS only. It does make Linux security software, but that is a business product for company servers rather than something you can buy for a laptop.

Bitdefender by Bitdefender · Security & passwords · No way to run it

Bitdefender Total Security lists Android, Windows, Mac and iOS. Linux is absent from the consumer range, and your home subscription will not install on a Linux desktop.

Bitdefender does publish Endpoint Security Tools for Linux, so it is fair to say the company supports Linux. That product is part of GravityZone, sold to organisations with an administrator managing fleets of machines from a central console. It is not sold or priced for one person at home, and setting it up on a personal laptop would be more trouble than it is worth.

For a home Linux desktop the honest answer is that antivirus is not the norm, because the malware a home user runs into is written for Windows and will not run on Linux. Your software comes from the system's app store rather than from download sites, and everything updates from the same place, which closes the usual doors.

That is not the same as being safe from everything. A scam email, a fake login page and a password reused in twenty places all work exactly as well against you on Linux. Those are the risks worth spending your attention on, and none of them is solved by antivirus.

Spend the attention elsewhere. Install updates when the machine asks, keep separate passwords, and stay suspicious of links in emails. If you regularly pass files on to Windows users, ClamAV will check them for you.

This doesn't have to stop you

One stubborn program doesn't have to decide the whole question. You can keep Windows on the same PC and restart into it only when you need Bitdefender. Everything else you do can move.
