Does Dragon NaturallySpeaking run on Linux?

Verdict: No

No. Nuance lists only Windows versions in Dragon's system requirements and has never made a Linux release. Linux dictation exists but it is not as good, and this one deserves a straight answer before you switch.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking by Nuance · Accessibility · No way to run it

Nuance's published system requirements for Dragon Professional Individual list Windows and Windows Server versions only. No Linux build has ever been made, Nuance has given no sign of making one, and Dragon hooks deeply into Windows itself to put dictated text into other programs. That last part is why compatibility layers do not help. Even if the program started, the part that types into your word processor and your browser would not work.

If you rely on Dragon because typing is painful or impossible for you, please do not switch on the strength of an article. Dictation is not a convenience in that situation, it is how you use a computer, and the honest position is that Linux is behind here. The safest arrangement is to keep the Windows machine, or to dual boot so the computer asks which system to start, and try Linux dictation properly before you depend on it.

What does exist on Linux is speech-to-text built on modern recognition models, which can be accurate on plain dictation into a text box. What is thin is everything else Dragon does. Voice commands for editing and correcting as you speak, navigating menus and windows by voice, custom vocabulary for names and jargon, and profile training that adapts to your voice over time are either missing, partial or need setting up by someone technical. Nothing on Linux is an equivalent product and anyone who tells you otherwise has not relied on Dragon.

Your Dragon voice profile does not transfer. There is no way to move the vocabulary and corrections you have built up over the years, so a move means starting again. If you decide to try, do it on a second machine or a live USB first, with your own microphone, dictating the kind of text you actually write, and judge it on that.

This doesn't have to stop you

One stubborn program doesn't have to decide the whole question. You can keep Windows on the same PC and restart into it only when you need Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Everything else you do can move.
