Does DS4Windows run on Linux?

Verdict: No

No. DS4Windows needs Windows 10 or newer and a Windows-only driver, so it does not run on Linux. The good news is that you do not need it, because Linux recognises PlayStation controllers already.

DS4Windows by DS4Windows project · Gaming · No way to run it

DS4Windows lists Windows 10 or newer, the Microsoft .NET desktop runtime and the ViGEmBus driver among its requirements. Those last two are Windows pieces with no Linux counterpart, so there is nothing to port and nothing to run through a compatibility layer.

It also solves a problem that largely does not exist on Linux. DS4Windows works by pretending your PlayStation controller is an Xbox controller, because many Windows games only understand Xbox ones. Steam does that job for you on Linux through Steam Input, which Valve's own documentation lists as supporting the PlayStation 4 controller alongside the Xbox ones.

In practice that means you plug the controller in, or pair it over Bluetooth, and Steam handles the rest. Inside Steam you can turn on PlayStation controller support, build custom button layouts, adjust stick sensitivity and save profiles per game, which covers most of what people used DS4Windows for.

Where you may notice a gap is the extras. Touchpad-as-mouse behaviour, light bar colour and some macro features are less consistent than they were with DS4Windows, and they vary by desktop and by game.

Steam's built-in controller settings remap any pad, including PlayStation ones, per game. It covers most of what DS4Windows did, without a driver.

Your files: DS4Windows profile files cannot be imported. Layouts are rebuilt inside Steam.

This doesn't have to stop you

One stubborn program doesn't have to decide the whole question. You can keep Windows on the same PC and restart into it only when you need DS4Windows. Everything else you do can move.
