Does HandBrake run on Linux?

Verdict: Yes

Yes. HandBrake is made for Windows, Mac and Linux by the same project, and the download page offers a Linux version. Your presets export from Windows and import on Linux.

HandBrake by HandBrake Team · Video · Has a Linux version

HandBrake's downloads page lists Linux next to Windows and Mac. The recommended route is the Flatpak from Flathub, which means you install it from your Linux system's app store in a click.

It is the same program, so nothing needs relearning. The built-in presets, the quality slider and the filters all look and behave as they do on Windows. If you built your own presets, HandBrake can export them to a file on the Windows machine and import them on Linux, so you do not have to set them up twice.

Your video files need no preparation. HandBrake reads the file, makes a new one and leaves the original alone, so copy your videos across and carry on.

One thing is different. Commercial DVDs and Blu-rays are copy protected, and HandBrake does not remove that protection on any system. Home-made discs and ordinary video files are fine.
