Does League of Legends run on Linux?

Verdict: No

No. Since Riot added its Vanguard anti-cheat in 2024, League of Legends cannot be played on Linux at all, including through Wine or a virtual machine. There is no workaround.

League of Legends by Riot Games · Gaming · No way to run it

League used to be one of the better games on Linux. Riot even allowed Wine and passthrough setups officially back in 2018. That ended when Vanguard was rolled out to League in 2024.

Vanguard is a closed anti-cheat that loads with the Windows kernel, the deepest part of the operating system. Wine, the tool that lets Windows programs run on Linux, has nothing to load it into, so the requirement simply cannot be met. Running Windows inside a virtual machine does not help either, because Vanguard detects and blocks that too. The League of Linux community wiki, the long-running reference for this, now states plainly that the game is no longer playable on Linux and has archived its old guides.

If League is important to you, the realistic answer is to keep Windows. Many people install Linux on one drive and keep Windows on another, choosing at startup which to use, which costs nothing but disk space. Trying to trick Vanguard is not worth it and risks a ban on your account.

Your account, champions, skins and ranked history are all held by Riot and are unaffected by anything you do to your computer.

This doesn't have to stop you

One stubborn program doesn't have to decide the whole question. You can keep Windows on the same PC and restart into it only when you need League of Legends. Everything else you do can move.
