Does Netflix run on Linux?

Verdict: Partly

Partly. Netflix plays in a browser on Linux, with the same account and subscription, but it caps out at 1080p rather than 4K and Netflix does not offer support for Linux.

Netflix by Netflix · Video · Works in a browser

There has never been a Netflix program to install on Linux, and there is none coming. What works is netflix.com in a browser, which is how most people watch on a laptop anyway.

Netflix lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera as supported on Linux, and says every one of them tops out at Full HD, 1080p. On Windows, Edge and the Netflix app can go to 4K, so if you pay for the premium plan and watch on a big screen, this is a genuine loss and worth knowing before you switch.

Netflix also says that because Linux comes in so many configurations it cannot guarantee Netflix will work, and its support team cannot help with Linux problems. In practice a current Firefox or Chrome on a mainstream distribution plays it fine.

Nothing happens to your account, your profiles, your watch list or your subscription. Downloads for offline watching are a phone and tablet feature, so you are not losing those on the desktop. If 4K on the TV matters, watch on the TV or a streaming stick and use the computer for everything else.
