Does PuTTY run on Linux?
Verdict: Yes
Yes. PuTTY is made for Unix as well as Windows, so the same program is on Linux, free, and in the app store on every mainstream distribution.
The PuTTY project publishes versions for Windows and Unix platforms, and Linux counts as Unix here. It is free, and you install it from your system's app store like anything else rather than downloading a file.
The window looks a little different because it uses the Linux toolkit rather than the Windows one, but the settings are in the same places and sessions behave the same way. Saved sessions do not carry across on their own, so if you have a long list of them, note the host names and ports before you wipe Windows and enter them again. It takes a few minutes.
Keys are the other thing to bring. PuTTY's private key files use its own format, and PuTTY on Linux reads that same format, so copying your .ppk files across works.
Pageant, the key agent you may have running in the tray on Windows, comes with the Linux package too, so the setup you are used to is all there.
