Does Roblox run on Linux?
Verdict: Partly
Partly. Roblox itself has no Linux version, but a free community project called Sober runs the game on Linux and works well today. It is unofficial and could stop working at any time.
Roblox Corporation supports Windows, Mac, phones, tablets and consoles. Not Linux. Its anti-cheat system, Hyperion, blocks the usual approach of running the Windows version through a compatibility layer, so that route is closed.
Sober is the way people play. It is made by a group called VinegarHQ, it is free, and it is installed from the Linux app store as a package called Sober. Rather than pretending to be Windows, it runs the Android version of Roblox, which Hyperion does not police the same way. You sign in with your normal Roblox account and play as usual, and many people report it running as smoothly as the Windows version.
Be clear about the risk before you rely on it. The developers describe Sober as experimental, say it is not supported or endorsed by Roblox, and warn it may be discontinued at any time. Roblox could also change something that breaks it. If your household's main use of a computer is Roblox, that is worth weighing up.
Roblox Studio, the tool for building games, does not run on Linux at all, so young creators need a Windows or Mac machine. Your account, Robux and places are all held by Roblox, so nothing on your computer needs saving.
