Does Studio One run on Linux?

Verdict: No

No. PreSonus builds Studio One for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 and for macOS 12.4 and newer. Linux is not supported, so the replacements are REAPER or Ardour.

Studio One by PreSonus · Music & audio · No way to run it

The Studio One technical specifications list Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11 22H2 and newer, 64-bit only, alongside macOS 12.4 or higher. Linux does not appear, and there is no browser version.

REAPER is where most Studio One users land. It has an official Linux build from the makers, the personal licence is inexpensive, and it can be rearranged to work the way you already work. Ardour is the free and open source option and is strong on recording and mixing, though its MIDI and virtual instrument side feels plainer than Studio One's.

Plug-ins are the thing to plan for. Studio One projects usually depend on Windows VST instruments and effects, and those do not run on Linux as they are. Linux has good free plug-ins, but they are different ones, so a project rebuilt on Linux will not sound identical.

Get your work out first. A .song file does not open on Linux. Export every track as a WAV starting at bar one, export your MIDI as .mid files, and note the tempo and time signature. From those any Linux program can rebuild the session.

What to use instead of Studio One

REAPER

Close matchPaid

Official Linux version, cheap personal licence, and endlessly adjustable so it can be made to feel familiar.

Your files: Cannot open .song projects. Imports WAV stems and standard MIDI files.

Ardour

Close matchFree

Free and open source, built for recording and mixing real instruments. Weaker on virtual instruments than Studio One.

Your files: Imports WAV, FLAC and MIDI. No .song support.

Bitwig Studio

Close matchPaid

Paid, but it has a proper supported Linux version and is the nearest commercial program in feel to Studio One.

Your files: No .song support. Imports audio stems and MIDI files.

This doesn't have to stop you

One stubborn program doesn't have to decide the whole question. You can keep Windows on the same PC and restart into it only when you need Studio One. Everything else you do can move.
