Does TaxAct run on Linux?

Verdict: Partly

Partly. TaxAct Online runs in Chrome, Firefox or Edge and those all work on Linux, but the download version is Windows software and TaxAct does not list Linux anywhere in its requirements.

TaxAct by TaxAct · Money & tax · Works in a browser

TaxAct sells two different things. The online version is a website you log into and it is the one that matters here. TaxAct's system requirements page lists Chrome, Firefox and Edge as supported browsers, and all three have Linux versions, so the online product is usable from a Linux machine.

The download version is a Windows program. TaxAct's requirements name Windows 10 or higher, with no mention of Linux, and the page notes the download products are not offered for Mac either. There is no Linux installer and running tax software through a compatibility layer is not a sensible experiment when a filing deadline and your own money are involved.

Bear in mind that TaxAct is a United States product. If you are filing an Australian or British return this is not the software you want anyway, and your tax office almost certainly has its own website that works in any browser.

Before you wipe Windows, save copies of your finished returns as PDFs and keep any .ta data files from the download version. PDFs open on Linux. The data files only open in TaxAct, so if you ever need to amend an old return you would do it through the online version or from a machine that still runs Windows.
