Does TurboTax run on Linux?

Verdict: Partly

Partly. TurboTax Desktop is Windows and Mac only and will not install on Linux, but TurboTax Online does your return entirely in a browser, which works fine on Linux.

TurboTax by Intuit · Money & tax · Works in a browser

Intuit's published requirements for TurboTax Desktop list Windows 11 64-bit and macOS Sonoma 14 or later. Linux is not mentioned, and the desktop product depends on Windows components, so there is no realistic way to run it.

TurboTax Online is the version most people use anyway. It runs in Chrome, Firefox or Edge, all of which install properly on Linux, and it handles the whole return, filing included. The difference between the two products is not Linux specific: the online version charges per return and keeps your data on Intuit's servers, while the desktop version lets you prepare several returns from one purchase and keeps the file on your own machine.

The practical route is to use TurboTax Online in a browser and stop thinking about it. If you must use the desktop product, for example because you file multiple returns, keep a Windows machine or use a friend's.

Your past returns matter here. TurboTax Desktop saves .tax files that only TurboTax Desktop opens, and no Linux program reads them. Before you switch, open each year you want to keep and save it as a PDF, which is what you actually need for records, loans and audits. Returns filed through TurboTax Online stay in your online account and can be downloaded as PDFs at any time.
