JetBrains Toolbox App

Free installer and updater for JetBrains coding tools such as IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm.

Our verdict

Toolbox is a small manager that sits in the corner of the screen and keeps your JetBrains coding tools installed and up to date. If you used IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, Rider or Android Studio on Windows, this is how you get them back on Linux.

JetBrains supports Linux properly here, which is a pleasant change from the rest of this category. The tools are the same ones, your settings sync across if you sign in, and nothing about your daily work has to change.

Two practical points. Toolbox is not in the Linux app store, so you download it from the JetBrains site and run it. And Toolbox being free does not make the tools free, so check which of them your licence covers before you rely on it.

What's good

  • Installs and updates every JetBrains tool for you, so there is nothing to chase manually
  • The app itself is free, and several of the tools it installs have free editions
  • Behaves the same on Linux as on Windows, including your settings and keyboard shortcuts

What to know first

  • Not on Flathub, so you download it from the JetBrains website yourself
  • Only manages JetBrains tools, so it is no use if you do not use them
  • Most of the tools it installs are paid subscriptions even though Toolbox is free
