Opera

Opera's own Linux browser, with the built-in VPN, ad blocker and sidebar messengers you get on Windows.

Our verdict

Opera makes Linux versions itself. The download page offers the installer file for Ubuntu and Mint style systems, one for Fedora style systems, and a Snap Store version.

It is the same browser. Sign in to your Opera account and bookmarks, saved passwords, open tabs and settings come across, the built-in ad blocker and VPN are there, and so is the sidebar with WhatsApp and Messenger in it.

The one thing to know is that Opera is not open source, unlike Firefox. If that does not bother you on Windows it should not bother you here. Take the download from opera.com rather than the Flathub listing, which is put together by the community rather than by Opera.

What's good

  • Made by Opera for Linux, with installer files on the same download page as Windows
  • Built-in ad blocker and VPN, the same as on Windows
  • Signs in to your Opera account and brings bookmarks, passwords and tabs across
  • Plays Netflix and other streaming video at up to 1080p

What to know first

  • Not open source, so you are trusting Opera the company
  • The Flathub build is a community package rather than one Opera publishes
  • Uses the same underlying engine as Chrome, so it is not a real alternative if that is your worry
