Does Counter-Strike 2 run on Linux?
Verdict: Yes
Yes. Counter-Strike 2 has its own Linux version on Steam, so it installs and plays like any other Linux game. Its anti-cheat (VAC) works on Linux.
Counter-Strike 2 installs and runs on Linux with nothing to set up, because Valve builds a Linux version and ships it in the same download as the Windows one. Signing in, matchmaking and your existing inventory all behave as they do on Windows.
The catch is speed rather than compatibility. The Linux build draws through Vulkan instead of DirectX, and players have reported large frame rate losses against the same PC running Windows. A report on Valve's own bug tracker put the gap at 40 to 60 per cent, and it has sat open since September 2023. On a mid range PC the game is still perfectly playable, but anyone chasing high frame rates for competitive play should expect less than Windows gives them.
Counter-Strike 2 is an action game from Valve, first released on 21 August 2012.
It is played online against other people. It is free to play.
