Does Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced run on Linux?
Verdict: Partly
Partly. Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced runs on Linux through Steam's Proton tool and players on ProtonDB rate it Gold, the second-highest rating, but its online play is guarded by BattlEye, which does not work on Linux. Expect single-player only.
The single player story runs on Linux. GTA Online does not. Rockstar added BattlEye anti-cheat to Grand Theft Auto V in September 2024, and its own support pages say that BattlEye is not supported on the Steam Deck, that you can play the story mode, and that you cannot play GTA Online. Steam lists the Enhanced edition as using kernel level anti-cheat as well.
That is a decision by Rockstar rather than a technical wall, because BattlEye can be turned on for Linux by a game's maker. Until Rockstar does that, count the online half as unavailable.
The Enhanced edition also needs a Rockstar Games account on top of your Steam one.
Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced is an action, adventure and racing game from Rockstar North, published by Rockstar Games, first released on 4 March 2025.
You can play it alone or co-operatively online. Steam lists partial controller support.
The evidence
- Its own Linux version
- No, it runs through Proton
- Player rating on ProtonDB

- Steam Deck (which runs Linux)
- Marked unsupported by Valve
- Anti-cheat
- BattlEye: Maker has refused Linux support
Notes from Are We Anti-Cheat Yet
- Story Mode works. GTA Online does not, because BattlEye is not enabled for Linux.
What you can do
No version of Linux and no setting can fix this, because the block is on the game's side. Trying to get around anti-cheat can also put your account at risk. If this is a game you play often, keep Windows on that PC, or install Linux beside Windows and restart into Windows to play.
