Does Xbox app for Windows run on Linux?

Verdict: Partly

Partly. The installed Xbox app is Windows only, but Xbox Cloud Gaming runs in Chrome or Edge on Linux at xbox.com/play, so a Game Pass subscription still gets you playing.

Xbox app for Windows by Microsoft · Gaming · Works in a browser

Microsoft does not make the Xbox app for Linux, and games installed through it are tied to Windows. If you were using it to download and play PC Game Pass titles locally, that part does not come across.

The cloud side does. Xbox Cloud Gaming is played through a browser, and Microsoft lists Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Safari as supported browsers on PCs, with no download or installation needed. Both Edge and Chrome are available on Linux, so you sign in at xbox.com/play and the game runs on Microsoft's hardware while your machine handles video and controller input. A wired connection helps a great deal.

The trade-off is honest enough. Streaming adds a small delay, the picture softens when your connection wobbles, and not every Game Pass title is in the cloud library. For slower-paced games it is fine. For anything that depends on fast reactions it is noticeably worse than playing locally.

Your save games live with your Microsoft account, so they follow you between cloud, console and any Windows machine you keep. Nothing is stranded.
