Déjà Dup Backups
Set-and-forget backup of your personal files, encrypted and on a schedule.
Our verdict
Déjà Dup is the backup tool most people should use, because it asks almost nothing of you. Pick which folders to include, pick where the copies go, set a schedule and it handles the rest.
It replaces File History on Windows. Copies go to an external drive, a network folder or a cloud account, and they are encrypted and compressed before they leave your machine. Each run only saves what changed, so nightly backups are fast.
What it will not do is put a dead computer back the way it was. It saves your documents and settings, not the operating system. Pair it with Timeshift, which snapshots the system itself, and between them you are covered.
What's good
- Three or four questions and your backups are running, which is as simple as this gets
- Encrypts everything with a password you choose before it leaves the computer
- Saves only what changed each time, so later backups are quick
What to know first
- Backs up your files and settings, not the whole system, so it will not restore a broken install
- Restoring a single old file means browsing through backup versions rather than a simple folder
- Backup destinations are limited compared with paid Windows backup suites
