Flameshot
Screenshot tool with arrows, blur and text you add right after you grab the shot.
Our verdict
Flameshot replaces the Snipping Tool and does rather more. Press the shortcut, drag a box, and a ring of tools appears for arrows, boxes, highlighting, text, counters and blur.
Blurring is the feature people end up using most. Covering an email address or a bank balance before you send a screenshot takes two seconds instead of a trip through an image editor.
The one rough edge is Wayland, the newer way Linux desktops draw the screen. On some systems the global shortcut does not fire until you assign it in the desktop settings yourself. It is a five-minute annoyance once, not an ongoing one.
What's good
- Annotation tools appear the instant you drag a selection, with no second app to open
- Blur and pixelate for hiding names and account numbers before you send a screenshot
- Keyboard shortcut, colours and buttons can all be changed to suit you
What to know first
- On newer Linux desktops that use Wayland the shortcut sometimes needs extra setup before it works
- No scrolling capture of a long web page
- The circle of buttons around the selection takes a few goes to learn
