Master PDF Editor

Paid PDF editor for Linux that can change the text and images already inside a PDF, not just annotate them.

Our verdict

Master PDF Editor is the answer when free Linux tools are not enough. Reading, highlighting and commenting on PDFs is well covered for free by Evince, Okular and Xournal++. Changing words that are already in a finished PDF is not, and that is the gap this fills.

It is made for Linux by Code Industry rather than ported reluctantly, so it behaves like a normal program. You can edit body text, swap images, fill and sign forms, and shuffle pages. Coming from Adobe Acrobat you will find most of the everyday jobs are here, in a plainer window.

The catch is the price. The trial lets you use everything, but every file you save carries a watermark until you buy a licence. If all you do is read and sign the odd form, stay with the free readers and keep your money.

What's good

  • Actually edits the text and images inside an existing PDF, which free Linux readers cannot do
  • Fills, validates and signs interactive PDF forms
  • Merges, splits and reorders pages in one place
  • You can try every feature before paying

What to know first

  • Costs money, and the trial stamps a watermark on anything you save
  • Closed source, so you cannot check what it does with your documents
  • The Flathub build is packaged by the community rather than by Code Industry
  • The interface is dated and a little cramped
