Mission Center
Task Manager for Linux. Shows CPU, memory, disk, network and graphics use, plus what each app is using.
Our verdict
Mission Center is the app to install when you go looking for Task Manager and cannot find it. The layout is deliberately familiar: a list of CPU, memory, disk, network and GPU down one side, a graph and the numbers on the other, and a tab that lists running apps so you can close one that has stopped responding.
It covers the everyday questions well. Why is the fan loud, what is eating the memory, is the drive busy, how much of the network am I using. It also reads graphics card load and temperature, which the older Linux system monitors tend to leave out.
What it is not is a diagnostics tool. If you were the sort of person who kept HWiNFO open with forty sensors logging, this will feel thin. For everyone else it is the right amount of information.
What's good
- Laid out like the Windows Task Manager, with the same graphs down the left
- Shows graphics card use and fan speeds, which most Linux system monitors skip
- Breaks usage down by app as well as by process, so the list is readable
- Free, and one of the first things worth installing on a new machine
What to know first
- It only reports, so there is no temperature alarm and no fan control
- Some readings depend on your graphics driver and a few cards report less than others
- It cannot show the deep chip and memory detail that CPU-Z or HWiNFO give you on Windows
The details
- Cost
- Free
- Open source
- Yes (GPL-3.0)
- How you install it
- App store (Flatpak), Built-in app store
Windows apps it can replace
